Silver Plated Condiment Server
19th c., American
This set of condiment servers are survivors of an Antebellum plantation in Louisiana. They were brought to us crushed and distorted, their mechanisms jammed, and parts missing. We built new parts, reformed and reinforced the crushed sections, rebuilt the mechanisms, and returned them to their owners completely ready to be used.

this is the silver plated mechanism viewed from the outside, with its base crushed, and its doors bent. The mechanism was jammed and gears were cracked.

One server, before

We rebuilt the antique broken gears by adding hand made parts which we soldered together. Parts which were loose we tightened by shimming and replacing cross pins.

The hidden mechanisms, disassembled.

Here are the completely restored mechanisms. We rebuilt and strengthened the base with interior bronze struts to transfer the lateral stresses, which collapsed the feet, to the center of the baseplate. This baseplate is joined at its center to a matching, rotating plate which is the base of the rotating upper section. The gear mechanism is hidden entirely within the base of the rotating section.
