Howard Newman’s works on paper are intimate by-products of the personal path of intellectual and autobiographical questioning that drives his work.
Continuing his study of the portrait beyond the Mother & Child series, Howard’s recent focus has been on European portraiture with its isolation of the figure in a deep, mysterious background. Eye to Eye, Constellation, and The Green Monster explore these historical conventions to probe our fascination with seeing, our love affair with the Cosmos, and the demon of envy, greed and jealousy. Back of a Man and Shell #1, #2, and #3 are examinations of the torso which are part of that intensive inquiry which began in 1980.
