Torso #1

Bronze on bronze base with black granite base, height: 62″, 1986 (original maquette, 1981) Newport Art Museum, Rhode Island

In Torso #1, I modeled my original maquette at eye level until, in my mind’s eye, it approached maximum energy and scale—like charging an electrical capacitor—like the clouds in a thunder storm. The energy resonates at various scales, as in music and in architecture. This just-above-human scale encourages the viewer to identify with the sculpture, to see as heroic the struggle each of us must go through to live a full life.
