Creation of the Yale Arts and Sciences Processional Mace

Newmans, Ltd. was commissioned in 2019 to design and construct a ceremonial mace for Yale University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, to be used by the dean during graduation and other formal processions.
After thoughtful research and ideation, powerful symbols and elements across the Yale campus and its history stood out to have gravitas in the intended ritualistic significance of the object. The use of technology as well as materials had to be carefully considered in the process as well. We designed and created the ceremonial mace of sterling silver, brass, and wood, using ancient and 21st century metalworking modern tools and processes.
This is its story.
